Using filler to repair dents like a body technician

Filler is a viscous resin commonly used to repair dents , and products such as the STC 2K automotive filler are often used for this type of repair. When done correctly, body filler can revitalize dents and other types of damage to the exterior of the vehicle and return it to its original shape. From minor dents to hail damage, filler can help cars look like new. So you can repair dents with filler in your own career as a coachbuilder.

You need more accessories than just filler to get the job done

While you will of course need filler for this type of dent repair (whether standard, medium or premium filler), you will also need various other types of materials and tools. These include sandpaper, filler, plastic spatula and car primer, as well as a mask, gloves and goggles, to name a few. Repairing dents with filler is a multi-step process – which we will discuss shortly – and requires attention and care. Therefore, make sure you have all the necessary equipment and accessories on hand. In addition, repairing dents with filler can be time-consuming, so patience is also required.

The process itself does not start with the immediate application of the filler

Since filler and paint do not tolerate or adhere well, the coachbuilder must prepare the surface himself during such work and sand it beforehand. If you remove at least three inches beyond the dent, you need to prepare the surface efficiently before mixing in the filler (consisting of the base putty and hardener) before it hardens. Curing usually takes less than five minutes. Add filler with a plastic spatula and spread it at least three inches outside the dent while smoothing the filler so that it is flush with the surrounding surface. Once this part of the process is done, you need to start grinding again.

Every body technician has to grind a lot

The most important part of the process is not so much filling in the damage, but grinding it down to make sure it’s done right. This is where the use of sandpaper obviously becomes extremely important. After the spatula has hardened, wrap the sandpaper around a sanding block. Gently sand over the surface with circular strokes and sand beyond the edge of the spatula to smooth the area. After this step, switch to a sandpaper with more grain and continue sanding until it is even. Next, take spot putty and glaze it over the surface before sanding the spot putty evenly. Spray the primer onto the surface and let it dry before sanding over it again. Since everyone in body training is taught how to overhaul and repair the exterior of vehicles, this is a type of body repair worth learning and mastering.
